Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii offers world-class ocean adventures, stunning beaches, and plenty of ways to experience aloha both above and below the water. Dive into reef-rich coves, chase waves along coastal breaks, or simply relax with sand between your toes — all within easy reach of Kailua-Kona.
Beaches
Magic Sands Beach (Laʻaloa Beach Park)
Also known as White Sands, this popular Kona beach offers soft white sand (seasonal) and great swimming and bodyboarding when conditions are calm. Lifeguards, restrooms, and showers make it easy to spend the day here. There is a fair amount of parking, but if full you might park a few blocks before at Pāhoehoe Beach Park.
Kamakahonu Beach
Located right in downtown Kailua-Kona, this small sandy beach is ideal for sunbathing, beginner-friendly snorkeling, and stand-up paddleboarding in calm waters. It is about a 5-7 minute walk from the condo. Rental gear (paddle boards, kayaks, etc.) and lessons are available nearby, and it’s a perfect spot to start or end a day of exploration.

Kahaluʻu Beach Park
Just a short drive south of town, Kahaluʻu is one of Kona’s best spots for snorkeling with colorful reef fish and green sea turtles in protected water. The gentle surf makes it family-friendly and great for beginners. It’s also a great place for beginners learning to surf.
Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach
One of the most famous black sand beaches in Hawaii, Punaluʻu is created from volcanic lava that has cooled and shattered over time. It’s a common resting spot for Hawaiian green sea turtles, making it an excellent place for wildlife viewing (from a respectful distance).
Good to know: The sand can get very hot — sandals are recommended.
Papakōlea Green Sand Beach
One of only four green sand beaches in the world, Papakōlea’s unique olive-colored sand comes from olivine crystals found in volcanic rock. Reaching the beach requires a scenic hike, but the experience is truly unforgettable.
Good to know: Access is by foot only

Scuba Diving
Kona’s clear, warm waters and vibrant reefs make it a bucket-list destination for divers of all levels. You’ll find opportunities for both thrilling boat dives and easy shore dives just steps from shore.
Manta Ray Night Dives
One of Kona’s signature experiences, manta ray night diving or snorkeling puts you in the water as gentle giants glide and feed under lights — a magical encounter no ocean lover should miss.

Kealakekua Bay
This protected marine conservation district south of Kona is renowned for its crystal-clear water, stunning coral gardens, and abundant sea life — excellent for scuba and snorkeling alike.

Surfing
Kona’s surf scene may not be as famous as on Oahu, but there are great breaks for riders at a range of levels. Conditions vary with swell and wind, so check local surf reports before heading out.
Kahaluʻu Bay
In addition to snorkeling, Kahaluʻu sometimes offers gentle surf ideal for beginners and lessons.
For lessons or board rentals, local surf shops in town can point you toward the best break for your skill level and conditions on the day.
Kohanaiki Beach Park (“Pine Trees”)
Often called “Pine Trees” by locals, this stretch at Kohanaiki Beach Park is one of Kona’s most popular and consistent surf spots. Multiple peaks spread out along the bay make it a fun choice for longboarders and intermediate surfers alike, and the relaxed local vibe keeps things welcoming.
Good for: All levels (when conditions are moderate)
Vibe: Chill and community-oriented
Notes: Rocky shoreline and reef require reef shoes for comfort.

Lyman’s
Just south of Magic Sands Beach, Lyman’s is a beloved local point break known for long, sloping left-hand waves when the swell lines up. It’s often best during winter with north or northwest swells, and the wave shape makes it a favorite among surfers with some experience.
Good for: Intermediate surfers
Vibe: Local favorite, scenic reef break
Banyans
Located right near downtown Kailua-Kona, Banyans is one of the most iconic surf breaks on the island. Voted among “Hawaii’s 10 Best Waves,” this reef break offers fast, exciting waves — mainly right-handers with lefts on the right day. Expect a more advanced lineup here, especially when the swell pumps.
Good for: Intermediate to advanced surfers
Vibe: Classic reef break with energetic local atmosphere
Honl’s Beach
Just north of Banyans, Honl’s Beach delivers consistent reef breaks with powerful rights and lefts — especially during summer southwest swells. The break is best for those with solid skills and comfort in reef conditions. Parking is available along Ali‘i Drive, but it fills up early on good surf days.
Good for: Intermediate to advanced surfers
Vibe: Popular local reef break
