Beaches

Magic Sands Beach (Laʻaloa Beach Park)

Also known as White Sands, this popular Kona beach offers soft white sand (seasonal) and great swimming and bodyboarding when conditions are calm. Lifeguards, restrooms, and showers make it easy to spend the day here. There is a fair amount of parking, but if full you might park a few blocks before at Pāhoehoe Beach Park.

Kamakahonu Beach

Located right in downtown Kailua-Kona, this small sandy beach is ideal for sunbathing, beginner-friendly snorkeling, and stand-up paddleboarding in calm waters. It is about a 5-7 minute walk from the condo. Rental gear (paddle boards, kayaks, etc.) and lessons are available nearby, and it’s a perfect spot to start or end a day of exploration.

Kahaluʻu Beach Park

Just a short drive south of town, Kahaluʻu is one of Kona’s best spots for snorkeling with colorful reef fish and green sea turtles in protected water. The gentle surf makes it family-friendly and great for beginners. It’s also a great place for beginners learning to surf.

Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach

One of the most famous black sand beaches in Hawaii, Punaluʻu is created from volcanic lava that has cooled and shattered over time. It’s a common resting spot for Hawaiian green sea turtles, making it an excellent place for wildlife viewing (from a respectful distance).

Good to know: The sand can get very hot — sandals are recommended.

Papakōlea Green Sand Beach

One of only four green sand beaches in the world, Papakōlea’s unique olive-colored sand comes from olivine crystals found in volcanic rock. Reaching the beach requires a scenic hike, but the experience is truly unforgettable.
